The registration of the population of Middelburg during the period of the nineteenth century was destroyed in May 1940. The administration from 1900 to 1937 is preserved. This administration was kept in large registers and was put into operation at the end of 1899 . From 1938 the registration of the population was carried out using the so-called 'persoonskaarten'(identity cards). For these cards please contact the Centraal Bureau voor Genealogie.

A total of 93,977 entries of the population from 1900 to 1937 are included. The database is temporarily unavailable in Zeeuwen Gezocht.

In the population register can be found: birth place and date, work, church, address, if the person is in the municipality of Middelburg is located and when he or she leaves or is deceased. The population register 1900-1937 can be consulted on microfiche in the study room of the Zeeuws Archief.

There are several other sources of population data for Middelburg before 1900.

- het Gestichtsregister 1863-1937, which includes the inhabitants of the various asylums in the city. Asylums were the hospital (Gasthuis), some nursing homes, the Citizen and the Poor Orphanage and Child Care (Kinderzorg).
-The Skipper Registry 1871-1937. The skippers and their families who had Middelburg as residence, were recorded in a separate register. This concerns mainly barge skippers.
- the Address books of 1869, 1874, 1878, 1888, 1889, 1892, 1893, 1895, 1897, 1898, 1899 and 1940. The address books are all householders and their addresses. Their profession or business is mentioned. In 1874 the town had 16,174 inhabitants, 3,261 people were registered as householder in 1899, the population increased to 16,735, with 5,542 inhabitants. In 1890 the numbers were  17,109 respectively 4446, in 1898 or 18,636 respectively 5967.
